The room was dark, and the atmosphere was solemn. A few windows high on the wall let some natural light in but were permanently shut to stop any child from escaping. Because of this, the stench of waste and sweat was excruciating. And there was only one door, bolted shut that no child dare come close to.

For those poor children assigned to this room, their life was a madhouse. There were more children than cots or cement to stand on. So many slept a few to a bed or had to lay in filth on the floor, but that was the favorable option for cooling off in a room with no air and it was the best place to hide when the women came to take them to work.

They were left there for hours on end. Throughout the day, the women in white would come in and examine whatever child they could grab. They would pick a few and with great effort leave with them. A few hours would pass before they were brought back, clean and with a belly full of food. But when they returned, they were not alright. They would stare off into the walls until sleep got them. Eventually, they would return to filth with the rest of them until it was time to work again.

The Child’s head was covered in bandages. The women and men in white had tried cutting out a severe infection from her head unsuccessfully. She laid unconscious with the other sick and dying before awakening unexpectedly a few hours later.

Her head ached but her heart ached more. She had searched for Tane first thing when she finally got to the room and found her on the ground, face and body covered in feces. Her old dress was gone and instead she wore what looked like a burlap sack. She didn’t bother to move or say anything when the Child held her close.

She rocked her for hours, telling her stories from not long ago. They were still children after all and should have had a life full of promise ahead of them. In that moment, however, they were terrified they would remain slaves in that mirky, grotesque room and be forced to do horrible things forever.

Cara's brother Care found the pair amongst the many bodies on the floor.

“You guys are still alive?!” he asked surprised and relieved.

“I’m so glad to see you Care. Where’s your sister?” the Child asked. Care sat down next to her and looked out into the dark around them.

“The things we’ve had to do since we’ve been here…” he said trailing off, “my father never talked about these things in the scary stories he told us. Men can look like men but act like…”

“Monsters…” Tane said under her breath. The Child closed her eyes, heartbroken by the pain in her voice.

“We can’t die like this,” she said with tears in her eyes.

Care continued, “We were in line together. She took my spot ahead and I watched them look at her, all over, you know.
